Carl Frederik Aagaard was born on January 29, 1833, in Odense, Denmark, and developed an early interest in the visual arts. At the age of 19, he began studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he acquired a solid foundation in craftsmanship. Alongside his studies, he worked with his brother as a wood engraver and etcher, honing his keen observational skills and attention to detail—two qualities that would later distinguish his landscape paintings.

After leaving the academy, Aagaard fully devoted himself to landscape painting. His most important teacher was Peter Christian Skovgaard, one of the leading figures of national romantic landscape painting in Denmark, whose influence is clearly evident in Aagaard's work. In 1865, he achieved artistic breakthrough by winning the prestigious Neuhausen Prize. His paintings primarily depict Danish natural idylls, but also carefully composed architectural scenes and Italian landscapes.

Aagaard undertook several study trips, particularly to Italy and Norway, capturing impressions in countless sketches. These later served as the basis for his detailed and atmospherically rich oil paintings in the studio. His works were regularly exhibited and awarded various medals. In recognition of his contributions to Danish art, he was awarded the title "Professor" in 1892—a high acknowledgment of his artistic achievements.

Carl Frederik Aagaard passed away on November 2, 1895, in Copenhagen. He is considered one of the significant Danish landscape painters of the 19th century, whose work is characterized by precision, use of light, and harmonious composition. His paintings preserve a poetic view of nature, as cherished in Danish Romanticism, to this day.
