Andreas Achenbach was born on September 29, 1815, in Kassel and is considered one of the most significant representatives of the Düsseldorf painting school. At a young age, his family moved to Düsseldorf, where he began receiving lessons at the art academy at the age of 12. His talent was recognized and nurtured early on, including by Wilhelm von Schadow. Achenbach dedicated himself primarily to landscape and marine painting, developing a style that combined realistic depictions of nature with a romantic atmosphere.
In the 1830s, he traveled through Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy, which had a lasting impact on him. He became famous for his seascapes with dramatic cloud and light moods and his depictions of rugged coastal landscapes. Achenbach masterfully captured the elemental force of nature in dynamic compositions, with wind, waves, and light playing a central role. His works exhibit technical perfection and a deep understanding of nature.
In addition to his artistic activities, Achenbach was also very successful in business. He was held in high esteem in artistic circles and contributed significantly to the international fame of the Düsseldorf school.
