Carl Blechen was born on July 29, 1798, in what is now Berliner Straße (formerly Luckische Gasse) in Cottbus. Initially trained as a banker, he spent every free moment painting, even while working in the banking sector. In 1822, after three years in banking, he began studying at the Berlin Academy of Arts.
Blechen's painting style was primarily influenced by his study trips. The sun-drenched landscapes of Italy, in particular, greatly impacted his art. As a result, his works were more grounded in reality compared to the romanticized style prevalent at the time: a new realism. The audience of that era was accustomed to exaggerated depictions in landscape painting, and Blechen satirized this expectation. His paintings are characterized by breathtaking light and color effects. They depict sunlight and light incidence in a completely new way and continue to impress to this day.
The artist, who suffered from depression, died on July 23, 1840, shortly before his 42nd birthday in Berlin, where he is buried in an unknown location at the Dreifaltigkeitskirchhof in Kreuzberg.
