The painter Gustave Courbet was born on June 10, 1819, in France and grew up in a bourgeois family. Following his parents' wishes, he began studying law in 1837. However, he quickly discovered his passion for drawing and started taking art lessons a year later. In 1840, he left his hometown of Besançon and moved to Paris to officially study law. Instead, he continued his art education and copied works by Spanish and Dutch painters in museums.
Between 1841 and 1847, he submitted twenty of his works to the Paris Salon, but only three were accepted, including his Self-Portrait with Black Dog. At this time, he lived off the support of his family.
Near his studio, Gustave Courbet met with other artists and intellectuals he had known since childhood. In this group, the new art movement of Realism was developed. In 1848, Courbet made another attempt to present his paintings to the Paris Salon. This time, he was successful. The jury enthusiastically accepted 10 of his paintings, and in 1849 he was awarded a gold medal for his work After Dinner at Ornans. His fame grew as his paintings attracted more attention, which was viewed with suspicion by the bourgeoisie.
Starting in 1860, the elements in his paintings visually merged, and distinctions and spatial separations were dissolved. Courbet used both a spatula and a brush, creating a uniform and slightly textured surface. Other artists adopted this style of painting in modified forms.
Courbet also exhibited his works in Belgium, England, and Germany, and participated in exhibitions in Switzerland during his final years, where he had fled due to a compensation claim. Due to a heart condition, he died there on December 31, 1877, at the age of 58. He was the main representative of Realism in France and influenced the development of subsequent art styles.
