Biography of Nicolas de Staël
Around 1938, Nicolas de Staël settled in Paris, where he joined the avant-garde and established his first artistic connections. In the following years, he developed an independent pictorial language between abstraction and figuration. Influenced by artists such as Georges Braque and Paul Cézanne, de Staël began to experiment with large-scale colour compositions, characterised by dense materiality and powerful structure.
During the 1940s, de Staël gained increasing recognition on the Paris art scene. His works are distinguished by thickly applied layers of paint and a reduced formal vocabulary, in which landscapes, still lifes, and figures are only hinted at. Despite his proximity to abstraction, his oeuvre always remained inspired by the visible world.
A decisive turning point in his work came with his move towards brighter colours and more open compositions in the early 1950s. Travels across France, and especially to the South, had a lasting impact on his palette. Works such as his southern French landscapes and seascapes reveal a growing lightness and transparency, without relinquishing the characteristic structure of his painting style.
In 1953, de Staël settled in Antibes on the Mediterranean coast, where, in an intense period of work, he created numerous important paintings. Despite his growing success, this time was marked by inner tensions, which are also reflected in the drama of his works.
Nicolas de Staël died on 16 March 1955 in Antibes. Today, his oeuvre is regarded as a major contribution to modern painting and as a unique bridge between abstraction and figuration.
