Fernand Léger was born on February 4, 1881, in Argentan in Normandy, France, and is regarded as one of the most important artists of classical modernism. He first trained as an architectural draftsman before moving to Paris in 1900 to devote himself entirely to art. There he studied at various academies and soon came into contact with the avant-garde movements of his time, which had a lasting influence on his style.

At the beginning of his artistic career, Léger experimented with Impressionist and Post-Impressionist influences, but soon developed an independent visual language. Inspired by Cubism, he created works characterized by clear lines, geometric forms, and bold color contrasts. His fascination with the modern world of machines was particularly formative and is reflected in his paintings through tubular forms and dynamic compositions.

During the First World War, Fernand Léger served as a soldier, an experience that profoundly changed his view of technology and industry. After the war, he increasingly turned to a clearly structured, almost mechanical pictorial language and became one of the leading exponents of the so-called “machine style.” In the 1920s he achieved great success and extended his work to film and mural painting.

With the outbreak of the Second World War, Léger emigrated to the United States, where he continued and further developed his artistic practice. After returning to France, he remained artistically active until his death on August 17, 1955. Fernand Léger left a lasting mark on 20th-century art and is today considered one of the most important representatives of Cubism.
