A new name emerges in the art scene:
Karl Hugger (1902 – 1992) was an artist who remains entirely unknown to this day. Many artists are known to have attended a renowned school or studied under a famous teacher (master student of......). This is not the case for Karl Hugger: He was a pure autodidact. Throughout his life, he was connected to art in the broadest sense and created many works (including paintings and sculptures). Unfortunately, he always refused to bring his works to the public and hold exhibitions. As a result, many sculptures and over 400 paintings from his estate need to be managed. These include drawings, watercolors, chalk, and oil paintings with various themes: self-portraits, portraits, still lifes, flower paintings, animals, clowns, harlequins, nudes, landscapes, body studies, animal studies, religious paintings, etc. A significant portion of his work consists of numerous nude paintings, some of which he created only sketchily. He did not commit to any style, creating very diverse works, ranging from (absolutely) realistic to completely abstract. Unfortunately, only a portion of his works is signed, as being a perfectionist, he was often not entirely satisfied with his work. None of his works have ever been seen publicly; framed ones hang in private homes, while unframed ones await review in drawers. The artist not only created numerous watercolors with a very unique color scheme but also a variety of oil paintings on canvas, predominantly with religious themes, but also with erotic content, and many large-format flower paintings, which are particularly significant for their color scheme. Karl Hugger created a variety of works but was also a highly dedicated teacher and principal of a primary school near Bad Mergentheim. The artist also wrote poetry, created linocuts, intricately etched animals into metal plates, played guitar and piano, and led a choir. In self-bound books, he wrote his own texts (fairy tales and stories) with finely crafted initials. Early on, Karl Hugger began making pencil drawings of family members (especially of his mother). Later, he often drew his wife, to whom he was deeply devoted. With his life's work, Karl Hugger made a significant contribution to art history.
