Peter Paul Rubens was born on June 28, 1577, in Siegen as the son of a jurist from Antwerp and initially attended a humanist and Catholic school. Before spending some time as a pupil of the landscape painter Tobias Verhaecht in Antwerp, he briefly served as a page to Margaret of Ligne, a position that did not suit him at all. Between 1592 and 1598 Rubens studied under Adam van Noort and Otto van Veen. He continued to work with the latter until 1600, even though he had already been admitted as a master to the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1598.
From 1600 to 1608 Rubens was active as court painter and diplomat to Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, while also undertaking extensive journeys to Rome, Genoa, and the Spanish court. The artistic impulses he encountered in Italy transformed his painting style, leading him away from Mannerism and towards the Baroque. In 1608 he returned to Antwerp and was appointed court painter to Archduke Albert one year later.
In Antwerp, Rubens established his own workshop and married Isabella Brant. From 1622 onward, he served as a diplomat to the English, French, and Spanish courts, successfully conducting peace negotiations between Spain and England. After Isabella’s death, he married Hélène Fourment in 1630. Rubens died on May 30, 1640, at his small country estate, the Steen, near Antwerp.
In addition to his numerous religious and mythological paintings, Rubens was also a sought-after portraitist of the European high nobility. He excelled at uniting dramatic scenes, dynamic compositions, and radiant colors on a monumental scale, achieving an expressive power that became emblematic of the Baroque. He became particularly renowned for his depictions of the female nude, whose opulence, sensuality, and vitality left a lasting impression and shaped the very notion of the “Rubenesque” ideal of beauty.
Rubens was not only an exceptional artist but also an intellectual cosmopolitan with a profound humanist education. His command of several languages and his diplomatic skills made him a key figure in the cultural and political life of his time. Through his workshop, where numerous important artists were trained, and through the dissemination of his compositions across Europe by means of prints, Rubens exerted an enormous influence on the development of European art—an artistic legacy that continues to resonate to this day.
