“Starry Night Over the Rhône” was painted in September 1888 during Vincent van Gogh’s stay in Arles and is considered one of his most important nocturnal landscapes. He created the work directly on the banks of the Rhône, where he studied the night sky in the open air – an unusual approach for his time.
At the heart of the composition are the reflections of the stars and gas lamps shimmering on the surface of the water, whose intense blues, yellows, and greens lend the scene an extraordinary luminosity. In the foreground, a strolling couple animates the scene without distracting from the celestial spectacle above.
The painting was completed just a few months before the world-famous “The Starry Night” and marks a crucial step in van Gogh’s exploration of light, colour, and nocturnal atmosphere. Today, it is regarded as one of the key works of his oeuvre and as one of the most striking night scenes of Post-Impressionism.
