Biography of Aubrey Beardsley

Sophisticated Art Nouveau (1872 - 1898)

This artist was born the 21st August 1872 in Brighton. In 1888, he took an apprenticeship in an architect's office. Four years later, Beardsley studied part-time at the Westminster School of Art and received an order to illustrate Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur". Inspired by Japanese art, he made his breakthrough in 1894 with the illustration of Wilde's "Salome" and began on the same year the magazine "The Yellow Book" with Harland and Lane, and produced posters. In the following years, Beardsley illustrated works by Poe, Wilde, Pope and Jonson and drew for magazines, until he got tuberculosis in 1896/97. In 1897, Beardsley joined the Catholic Church and died on 16th March 1898 in Menton.

Beardsley, who made almost exclusively photographs and posters, is one of the most interesting artists of the Art Nouveau. There are only two known oil paintings made by him: "A Caprice" and "Woman with mask".
