Biography of Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599- 1660)

This baroque Spanish artist was one of the most important portrait painter of his time. At the court of the royal family, he portrayed numerous members, and created historically important paintings. He also influenced other famous painters such as Francisco de Goya, Édouard Manet, as well as Picasso and Salvador Dalí who reinterpreted his paintings.

Velázquez was born in Seville on June 6, 1599. The city was one of the largest in Spain and had a high intellectual and cultural interest, which attracted many painters and artists, who supplied paintings and other artworks to churches and monasteries. Velázquez began painting at one of these painting workshops at the age of ten. Portraits became one of his main themes.

He died on August 6, 1660 he in Madrid.
