Hundertwasser was born in Vienna on December 15, 1928 as Friedrich Stowasser and in 1948, he studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Vienna for three years. An exhibit by Egon Schiele inspired Friedensreich Hundertwasser immensely, but he slowly developed his own style. In 1949, he adopted the name "Hundertwasser" and traveled throughout Europe and Northern Africa. A first exhibit showed his works from 1953 to 1956 in Vienna, Cologne, Paris and Milan; followed in 1958 by his "Moldiness Manifesto against Rationalism in Architecture”. The first Hundertwasser movie was released in 1966. In 1974, he created a concept for the Vienna Pedestrian Zone, followed by a housing project in 1980, that Hunderwasser planned to the request of the City of Vienna. In the same year, he was honored with a State Award and he accepted it with a speech against nuclear power. In 1985, he designed the Hundertwasserhaus for the City of Vienna.

Fridensreich Hundertwasser viewed himself as the re-creator of the Viennese Art Nouveau, he painted colorful, ornamental paintings. He desired to protect the environment and create livable conditions for people: both are reflected in his Architecture, which appears organic, colorful and contains many “Green“ areas. His final residence was in New Zeeland. Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser died on February 19, 2000 aboard the cruise ship Queen Elisabeth 2.
