Biography of Walter Crane

The craftsman among painters

Walter Crane was born on August 15, 1845 in Liverpool, England. The painter and illustrator is considered one of the main representatives of the so-called Arts and Crafts Movement. This British movement emerged in the mid-19th century and was a return to craftsmanship in the wake of advancing industrialization and mechanical production.

Crane learned the art of illustration and engraving in an apprenticeship at the age of 13 and received drawing instruction at Heatherly's School of Art.

His artistic career, however, was dominated by the craft of engraving and illustration. She illustrated numerous books, covers, and did commissioned work. He also created some of his own works in oil and watercolor.

On March 14, 1915, at the age of 70, Walter Crane died in Horsham in West Sussex, southern England.
